5G Device Forerunner Initiative

Following the collaboration announcement earlier this year, MediaTek and China Mobile have signed a memorandum regarding the “5G Device Forerunner Initiative” at the 2018 MWC SH Global End Device Summit. The initiative was kick-started by China Mobile to promote the development of 5G devices such as smartphones, tablets and much more, targeting the 5G test pilot program this year, pre-commercial deployment in 2019, and commercial rollout in 2020.

MediaTek Helio M70

In addition to this, MediaTek announced its first 5G baseband chipset, Helio M70, will be ready in 2019. The Helio M70 is designed in compliance with the 3GPP Rel-15 5G new radio (NR) standard interface and includes support for standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) network architectures. It supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave frequency bands defined by the 5G standard and will meet operator/regional requirements.

In-line with its directive of technology democratization and enablement, MediaTek is committed to bringing 5G to everybody, with Corporate Sr. Vice President, Chuang Cheng-Te, noting that “MediaTek is committed to promoting the adoption of the latest technologies. With the commercialization of the first 5G baseband chipset, Helio M70, consumers will be able to enjoy the exciting 5G experience at a more reasonable price point.”

5G Readiness

MediaTek has been an active member of 5G technology development, participating in the standardisation process and collaborating with equipment makers in conducting 5G network tests and demonstrating innovative new technologies such as NOMA/MUIC spectral efficiency increases, mmWave beam-forming and mmWave antenna designs in smartphone-sized devices.

With its highly diverse product portfolio, 5G technologies will become a key asset to MediaTek’s many connected SoC’s, enabling a new wave of exciting experiences and novel opportunities across a range of industries and to billions more people.
